THE HEBREW MASORETIC TEXT vs. THE GREEK SEPTUAGINT TEXT (LXX)

(Biblical Evidence for the Catholic Faith)
✝️ The Catholic Bible is based on the SEPTUAGINT TEXT used by the Jews in Alexandria. This is also the translation of the OLD TESTAMENT used by Jesus Christ, the Apostles, and the first Christians.
✝️ The Bible of the Protestants is derived from the MASORETIC TEXT of the Jews who persecuted the first Christians and killed Christ.
According to history:
✝️ “…In the 3rd century B.C., the Old Testament began to be translated from Hebrew and Aramaic into GREEK, primarily for the benefit of the large JEWISH COMMUNITY in ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, whose language was GREEK. This Greek translation of the Old Testament is called the SEPTUAGINT...” (Encyclopedia International, Vol. 2, 1967, p. 569).
✝️ “Sources of the SEPTUAGINT….It was made directly from HEBREW ORIGINALS that frequently differed considerably from the present Masoretic text” (Encyclopedia Britannica Micropedia, Vol. 2, 1979, p. 885).
✝️ “In addition to all the books of the Hebrew canon, the SEPTUAGINT contains the extra books known to Protestants and Jews as the Apocrypha and to Catholics as the DEUTEROCANONICAL BOOKS” (Encyclopedia Britannica Micropedia, Vol. 9, 1975, p. 63).
✝️ “Jews at first welcomed the Greek SEPTUAGINT. With the rise of Christianity, however, it became primarily associated with the CHRISTIAN CHURCH. The Jews repudiated it and prepared other Greek translations. Most of the quotations of the Old Testament that appear in the New Testament have been made from the SEPTUAGINT” (Collier's Encyclopedia, Vol. 4, 1983, p. 127).
✝️ “The EARLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, the language of which was GREEK, used the SEPTUAGINT, not the Hebrew original, as its BIBLE, so it was in the SEPTUAGINT TEXT that the Christians located the prophecies that they claimed were fulfilled by Christ” (Encyclopedia Britannica Micropedia, Vol. 9, 1975, p. 63).
✝️ “When the New Testament writers quoted from the Old Testament, they nearly always quoted from the SEPTUAGINT, not from the Hebrew text. Indeed, the SEPTUAGINT soon became the OLD TESTAMENT of the CHURCH” (A Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs, p. 607).
✝️ "…[T]he SEPTUAGINT, rather than the Hebrew text, became the BIBLE of the EARLY CHURCH...” (Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia, Vol. 23, 1983, p. 306).
✝️ “The LXX was the OLD TESTAMENT translation used most of all by the EARLY CHURCH. JESUS CHRIST would have used the SEPTUAGINT as His BIBLE” (Encyclopedia of Bible Facts, p. 26).
✝️ “When Christianity began to spread throughout the Greek-speaking world about the A.D. 50's, Christians used the GREEK TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE [SEPTUAGINT]. This translation became the CHRISTIAN OLD TESTAMENT. During the A.D. 1500's, some PROTESTANT SCHOLARS became concerned that the Old Testament contained books not found in the Hebrew Bible. The scholars REMOVED these books from the Old Testament and called them Apocrypha. For this reason, the PROTESTANT OLD TESTAMENT includes ONLY those writings that form the Hebrew Bible...” (The World Book Encyclopedia, Vol. 2, 2000, p. 282).
✝️ St. John Henry Newman said, “To be deep in history is to cease to be a Protestant.”
